Department of Biomedical Engineering
DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at SMKFIT was started in the year 2005 with an aim to undertake cutting-edge research, and convert results into the next generation of medical products, lies in teaching engineering science, analysis, and design within the context of integrating biology and engineering within courses and design projects. This department is home to faculty of excellence, exceptional students and laboratories engaged in an array of interdisciplinary biomedical activities. From understanding the human genome to pioneering biomedical technology, SMKFIT Biomedical Engineering students are committed to the advancement of education and research in biomaterials, sensory systems, cardiopulmonary engineering, neuroscience, biomedical signal processing, imaging and biomechanics.
The department is an institutional member of premier organizations in this field such as Biomedical Engineering Society of India (BMESI), Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (SBAOI), India and Medical Computer Society of India. The institute has a student chapter of the SBAOI, Chennai with students as life members. All students are members of MEDNIC - Students Chapter of BMESI and Association of Biomedical Engineering at SMKFIT.
In the first year at college, students are introduced to courses such as Basic Engineering, Mathematics and General Science. This helps them to acquire a better understanding of the subjects to be studied in subsequent semesters, which include:
Medical and healthcare subjects like Biochemistry, Human Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and Pathology. These subjects are introduced mainly to understand the basic structure and functions of the human body and the pathologic conditions which form the basis for the biomedical applications. Basic subjects of electronics and communication engineering, have wide applications in biosignal conditioning and transmission. They include Electronic Devices, Circuits and Networks, Analog and Digital Integrated Circuits and Principles of Communication.
Signals and Systems deals with acquiring the signals, followed by Digital Signal Processing and Digital Image Processing which forms the basis for the biosignal and medical image processing. The core subjects of biomedical engineering are Biosensors, Biomedical Instrumentation, Radiological, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Equipments Systems used for measuring and interpreting the various data and patients.
Biomaterials deal with materials that can be used in implantation and many features of artificial organs and devices, such as ceramics, polymers, metals, alloys, and composite materials, with the goal of minimizing implant rejection and simulating the body's original biomechanical environment. The architecture and programming languages – Microprocessors and Computer Architecture deal with areas concerning computer hardware. The various computer software subjects include Visual Programming and Computers in Medicine which help in understanding the applications of computers in the field of medicine.
Apart from core subjects, the students have a choices of selecting any two elective subjects from specialized areas like Biomechanics, Neural Networks and its Applications, Pattern Recognition, Physiological Modeling, Medical Informatics, Biofluids and Dynamics, Medical Imaging Techniques, etc.
In addition, special interest is taken to ensure that practical sessions related to the theory papers are conducted at regular intervals. To strengthen the concepts of theory and to provide hands-on experience, practical sessions are provided along with mini projects. In the final year, the students work on projects along with a dissertation.
